Chic Feldman Foundation

The Chic Feldman Foundation, which made substantial financial contributions to numerous Scranton-area organizations during its existence, disbanded in 1999 after inducting its final Scranton-Area Sports Hall of Fame class.

The highlight of the 25th anniversary dinner on April 25 at Genetti Manor in Dickson City was the unveiling of a plaque listing the names of close to 40 inductees. The plaque is displayed at the Scranton Boys and Girls Club on Ash Street in Scranton.

Hall of Fame selections began in 1968. The Foundation had contributed thousands of dollars to charities in Northeastern Pennsylvania and the practice continued even after the final dinner.Eventually the balance in  the checking  account was donated to the Commonwealth Medical College in Chic Feldman’s name.

The Foundation also sponsored a basketball tournament for high school girls for17 years.

The Foundation was named after the sports editor of The Scranton Tribune and The Srantonian in 1974, two years after he passed away at ringside while covering boxing matches at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Former State Senator Robert J. Mellow of Peckville, Pennsylvania, was the Foundation’s only president and won plaudits for its successful run.
